Caribbean Cruise
05 February 2002

To celebrate Australia Day (January 26th), we went on a cruise from Miami to the Caribbean for a week. It was organized by Atlantis Events and we were aboard the Norwegian Sun for seven days. There were about 1800 passengers and 800 staff on board the ship which was 13 storeys high. I was surprised it didn't turn upside-down as it had only a 26ft draft.

We knew of a couple of guys who were going to be on the cruise but no one we really knew well. Fortunately it was a good opportunity to meet people and we came back with a lot of new friends and acquaintances. Above is Robert with Bruce and Billy in St Croix...

and me with Pete and Pete in San Juan. It seemed like everyone exchanged e-mail addresses, and lots of guys had digital cameras so we will probably get a few more photos yet.

We spent a lot of time during the day just sitting by the pool as it was warm and sunny almost all the time. Robert is in the middle of the picture above. Here I am with Paul and David from Fort Lauderdale:

The ship stopped at San Juan in Puerto Rico, St Croix in the US Virgin Islands, Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and Nassau in the Bahamas. In the Virgin Islands it was a little odd to see everyone driving on the left just like in Australia but in US-made cars with the steering wheel on the left,

There was dancing on the ship most afternoons and evenings by the pool. The T-dances in the afternoons were probably the most fun as it was still sunny, the music was very light-hearted and the crowd was friendly. The DJs (Warren Gluck and Brett Henrichsen) did a great job.

We were surprised at how much effort some people had put into preparing (and packing) costumes for the variously themed evenings.
Martin and Bill had loaned us their video camera for the trip. We didn't take a lot of video, but what we did take I have cut down to two and a half minutes.
