Jay Arrives

It's been a long time since my last e-mail, partly because we haven't been doing a lot beyond the round of work and gym through Winter and because we've been busy trying to work out what we want to do in the future.

In mid June, Jay arrived from the US. On his first day we took him to the beach since that's what foreigners expect in Australia. It was a very cold and windy day in Winter in Melbourne and something of a contrast to Summer in Los Angeles where he had been the day before. Here you can see the city in the background.

He started work at Atari the following week which meant we got a copy of their new Transformers game for Robert to "test". The Playstation2 and Xbox and Gamecube arrived along with all our other stuff shipped from the US and were united with the Nintendo64 and Playstation1 we left here. Atari will be an interesting place when the Formula 1 Grand Prix is on here as it is on the 11th floor or a building overlooking the track.

Jay needed to be introduced to the Australian natives, so we went to Healesville Sanctuary. The weather reflected my memories of childhood trips to Healesville: it was cold and wet and some of the animals were less interested than we were in getting out in the rain. We did see emus, roos, echidnas, platypuses, wombats and a Tasmanian devil (at a distance) as well as some of the even more strangely named little marsupial creatures.

There is also a collection of raptors at the Healesville Sanctuary (raptors being birds of prey, not the things from Jurassic Park). We were lucky to catch the display as they let them out to fly around, getting to see the eagles and kites.

In July Saxon had his first trip to the beach. We drove to Sorrento where he played on the sand but did not want to go in the water. Since then he has been swimming often as my mother has been taking him to the beach once or twice a week and he will now chase sticks or other dogs into the water.

Here is Saxon with Robert at the beach near Elwood where he has been swimming. Now that the weather is warming up it is a little more appealing. This coming weekend we are taking him to Ocean Grove, near where the Bell's Beach Surf Classic is held. Saxon has also been going to obedience class each Saturday and seems to be getting pretty good at doing what he's told.

It has been an unusually wet Winter in Melbourne which has been good for the water supply which was quite low after a few years of low rainfall, but it has made for a very long Winter for Jay and Robert who came out of Spring in San Francisco back into Winter here. We are planning to visit Queensland in a few weeks and by then it should really be warming up here. Here are Robert and Jay in the Botanic Gardens in Melbourne which are looking very green after the rains.

I had to go to Sydney two weeks ago for the Australian Society of Anaesthetists Annual Meeting. I had some research to present which went well and enjoyed many of the sessions I went to. This picture is taken from the platform at Circular Quay station as I was catching the train to the airport to go home. I hope we'll get to visit Sydney together soon as it's not so much fun on my own.
